This declaration helped shift public opinion, marking a major milestone for LGBTQ equality.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12521\" src=\"https:\/\/evaggelatos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/\u039d\u03b1-\u03b6\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd-\u03c4\u03b1-\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/evaggelatos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/\u039d\u03b1-\u03b6\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd-\u03c4\u03b1-\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac-1.jpg 552w, https:\/\/evaggelatos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/\u039d\u03b1-\u03b6\u03ae\u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd-\u03c4\u03b1-\u03c0\u03b1\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ac-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The resolution stated,<strong> \u201cWe will no longer insist on a label of sickness for individuals who insist that they are well and demonstrate no generalized impairment in social effectiveness.\u201d<\/strong> The statement continued to say the APA supports \u201ccivil rights legislation at local, state, and Federal levels that would insure homosexual citizens the same protections now guaranteed to others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, more than 40 years later, LGBTQ advocates are still fighting to achieve that reality. Despite significant steps forward, 31 states still lack clear, fully-inclusive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people, meaning that LGBTQ people are at risk of being fired, denied housing, and denied services for who they are or whom they love.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why HRC is fighting to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/the-equality-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Equality Act<\/a>, which would provide consistent and explicit federal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs and jury service.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the APA has continued to advocate for LGBTQ people, including forcefully <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/policy-and-position-statements-on-conversion-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opposing<\/a> the dangerous practice of so-called \u201cconversion therapy\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/newsroom\/news-releases\/apa-opposes-banning-transgender-service-members-from-serving-in-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opposing<\/a> the Trump-Pence Administration\u2019s ban on qualified transgender people serving in the military.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"divider\"><a class=\"masthead__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/staff\/Elliott-Kozuch\">Elliott Kozuch<\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/flashbackfriday-today-in-1973-the-apa-removed-homosexuality-from-list-of-me<\/div>\n<section class=\"blog__content\">\n<div class=\"resource-listing__filed\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div id=\"comments\" data-swiftype-index=\"false\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forty-four years ago, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) &#8212; the largest psychiatric organization in the world &#8212; made history by issuing a resolution stating that homosexuality was not a mental illness or sickness.
