We\u2019re not ready\u201d is being shared widely online in recent weeks given the impact of COVID-19 around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything kills over 10 million people in the next few decades, it\u2019s likely to be a highly infectious virus rather than a war,\u201d Gates said during the Ted Talk. \u201cNot missiles, but microbes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, he said the same thing at an event in Davos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty surprising how little preparedness there is for it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jDxb21qIilM&amp;t=25s\">Gates said in 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> (AAAS) annual meeting in Seattle last month, Gates said the impact of COVID-19 could be \u201cvery, very dramatic,\u201d particularly if it spreads to areas like sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"callout clearfix\">\n<h4 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2020\/bill-gates-calls-federal-government-disorganized-covid-19-testing-reddit-ama\/\">Bill Gates calls out federal government for disorganized COVID-19 testing in Reddit AMA<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is a huge challenge,\u201d Gates said on Feb. 14. \u201cWe\u2019ve always known that the potential for either a naturally caused or intentionally caused pandemic is one of the few things that could disrupt health systems, economies and cause more than 10 million excess deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gates pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2020\/coronavirus-future-vaccines-inside-quest-develop-faster-responses-pandemics\/\">advances in molecular diagnostic tools<\/a> as one promising safeguard against such outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re on the cusp, in science, of being able to make good tools to do the diagnosis, provide vaccines to provide therapeutics including antivirals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/Media-Center\/Press-Releases\/2020\/02\/Bill-and-Melinda-Gates-Foundation-Dedicates-Additional-Funding-to-the-Novel-Coronavirus-Response\">committed $100 million<\/a>\u00a0to fighting coronavirus, as part of its broader efforts in global health.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates Foundation is also reportedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2020\/report-amazon-gates-foundation-aim-team-scientists-home-test-kits-coronavirus\/\">exploring the idea of supplying at-home testing kits<\/a> for the novel coronavirus in Seattle, the initial epicenter of the U.S. outbreak that has now spread across the country.
