The mutation has also been detected in recent outbreaks in China.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no evidence from the epidemiology that the mutation is considerably more infectious than other strains, said Benjamin Cowling, head of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Hong Kong. \u201cIt\u2019s more commonly identified now than it was in the past, which suggests that it might have some kind of competitive advantage over other strains of Covid-19,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"thirdparty-embed \">\n<div class=\"thirdparty-embed__container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.megaphone.fm\/BLM6800623419\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As Southeast Asian countries take various steps to prevent a resurgence while reopening limited travel, they struggle with people breaching quarantine rules after returning from overseas as well as <strong>false negative test results at borders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"desktop-in-article-1-QF6KPST1UM0W01\" class=\"page-ad\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"presentation\" data-position=\"desktop-in-article\">\n<div id=\"d4be40eb7e0261437a4fbacda86ee83a\" class=\"bb-ads__ad\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"desktop-in-article-ad-dummy\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The man who returned from India had tested negative when he arrived in Malaysia. He has since been sentenced to five months in prison and fined for breaching quarantine.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"peoples-cooperation\">People\u2019s Cooperation<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cPeople need to be wary and take greater precautions because this strain has now been found in Malaysia,\u201d the country\u2019s Director-General of Health Noor Hisham Abdullah wrote in a Facebook <a title=\"Facebook post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DGHisham\/posts\/3552118904811972?__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARBV7AfSD2SLbEq7ujs3RwxCN0bM5YmV_PKdQzkPw47VRXnOfRdWxnEyJhaEReLIIOIvqwwnTDIdaSrb-nSTMnJctxvkvV_23XRUw7N99oV5FYRtP5J3IpoNw9tuBzQKU3l7_7BkE00p3Vfl7Rc1qNeqzLxsGN6nuMXm2hyOxnkUZzLFfKx48uMDXrzLK3c8o2enknodT53LEmVjVMgEfBEdelTz-faP09woRDG-PjLGbGrM1aW5ZlzyHETwd29MeHzwlRIb96StKfSPWM_3Q4vCTHoXgMsivQTnhFayfxb590307eHJF0xC1ByxPSvQW5a4Ajwoga7-CmppzCV9XW8RLg&amp;__tn__=-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a>, saying the strain can make it 10 times more infectious without citing a study. <span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>\u201cThe people\u2019s cooperation is very needed so that we can together break the chain of infection from any mutation.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The strain \u201cmight be a little bit more contagious. We haven\u2019t yet got enough evidence to evaluate that, but there\u2019s no evidence that it\u2019s a lot more contagious,\u201d University of Hong Kong\u2019s Cowling said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Noor Hisham warned that the strain could mean existing studies on vaccines may be incomplete or ineffective against the mutation.<\/strong><\/span> That\u2019s even as a <a title=\"Cell Press\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/pdf\/S0092-8674(20)30817-5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">paper<\/a> published in Cell Press said the mutation is unlikely to have a major impact on the efficacy of vaccines currently being developed.<\/p>\n<p>While Malaysia has largely managed to prevent a resurgence of the virus seen elsewhere in the world, the number of new cases found in the country has been picking up. The country reported 26 new cases on Saturday, the most since July 28.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed cases in the Philippines have surged 76% from the end of July to a total of 164,474 as of Monday.
