Seven teenage boys in the U.S. reportedly developed chest pain and heart inflammation within days of receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 shot, according to a new study published Friday, marking another possible, though yet unproven and rare, link between mRNA vaccines and heart conditions that authorities in Israel<\/a>, Europe<\/a> and the U.S.<\/a> are investigating.<\/p>\n

The seven boys, between the ages of 14 and 19, reported to hospital with chest pains after receiving the Pfizer shot, according to the study<\/a> published in Pediatrics<\/em> Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Scans detected a type of muscle inflammation called myocarditis, which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring<\/a> as a potentially rare side effect to the mRNA Covid-19 vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

None of the teens were critically ill and all were able to be sent home from hospital within a few days, the Associated Press<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The doctors determined none of the teens to have had a rare inflammatory condition associated with Covid and reported only one to have displayed evidence of a potential prior Covid-19 infection, which has also been linked<\/a> to myocarditis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A linked editorial emphasizes the overwhelming benefits of vaccination in children, something echoed<\/a> by the CDC, which wholeheartedly recommends vaccination and highlights the fact that \u201cmost patients with myocarditis\u2026 responded well to medicine and rest and quickly felt better.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A Pfizer spokesperson told Forbes<\/em> any \u201cadverse events are thoroughly reviewed\u201d and that, at this time, \u201cno causal link to the vaccine has been established\u201d with more than 300 million doses delivered worldwide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

While the mRNA vaccines have not been plagued with concerns over rare blood clots\u2014as AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson jabs have\u2014concerns have emerged over a potential link to heart inflammation. No link has been established, however, and the CDC record<\/a> no deviations from the levels of heart issues that would normally be expected in the general population, though further studies are underway to make sure. Officials in Europe are also investigating<\/a> the issue and there have been reports from Israel where cases have been observed<\/a> in, mostly, young men.<\/p>\n
