As one of then-President Trump\u2019s chief medical advisers on COVID-19, he must have known that remdesivir had a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/two-drugs-reduce-risk-death-ebola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50% death rate<\/a>, compared to 35% of two other drugs in the trial \u2013 and that serious side-effects, including at least one death, led to the drug being pulled and research on it abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Anthony Fauci know about remdesivir\u2019s death rate? Oh, you better believe it. And now he was going to push this on the masses,\u201d Ardis told the Corona Investigative Committee, organized by German-American lawyer Reiner Fuellmich who specializes in the prosecution of fraudulent global corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Ardis said that Fauci cited only the Ebola trial and a study from remdesivir\u2019s manufacturer, Gilead Sciences Inc., on just 53 COVID-19 patients, when he chose it as the leading contender to fight the pandemic virus.<\/p>\n<p>Gilead\u2019s \u201ccohort study\u201d conducted for \u201ccompassionate use\u201d on patients with COVID-19 was only 28 days long. It reported that of 61 patients treated with the drug, eight were excluded for missing information,\u00a0 32 (60%) of 53 remaining patients reported adverse events including increased liver enzymes, diarrhea, rash, and kidney function impairment. Twelve patients (23%) had \u201cserious\u201d adverse events including multiple-organ-dysfunction syndrome, septic shock, acute kidney injury, and hypotension (low blood pressure).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Side-effects or symptoms?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Each of these symptoms \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7533045\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-organ failure<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-sepsis-alliance.org\/news\/2020\/4\/7\/update-can-covid-19-cause-sepsis-explaining-the-relationship-between-the-coronavirus-disease-and-sepsis-cvd-novel-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">septic shock<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41581-020-00356-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acute kidney injury<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7302068\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypotension<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 are described in medical literature as features of COVID-19 itself.<\/p>\n<p>Ardis said that many baffling symptoms that doctors began attributing to SARS-Co-V2, the virus that causes COVID-19, early in the pandemic were in fact side-effects of the remdesivir used to treat it.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci \u201cknew it for two years before he mandated this drug that it was deadly,\u201d Ardis said. \u201cI call it Fauci\u2019s genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolfgang Wodarg, a physician, politician, and former head of the public health department in Flensburg, Germany, agreed with Ardis that remdesivir is \u201cvery toxic\u201d and was misused for an uncertain diagnosis based on a PCR test that is now in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"subscribe-form-inserted\">He said that many treatments including remdesivir, ventilators, and extremely high doses of hydroxychloroquine were used inappropriately early in the pandemic \u201cpanic\u201d and produced \u201cvictims we could be afraid of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said, \u2018This is COVID-19. They all die.\u2019 But they killed them. I think this is something like genocide,\u201d Wodarg agreed.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Curious rise<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Remdisivir\u2019s rise to the top of COVID-19 therapeutics is marked by many odd favors and chances. Just two days after SARS-Co-V2 was declared the cause of COVID-19 on January 8, researchers from Gilead, the University of North Carolina, and Vanderbilt University published a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-019-13940-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0reporting that remdesivir could inhibit the related MERS coronavirus in both test tubes and mice.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later, doctors treated the first confirmed patient with COVID-19 in the United States with remdesivir \u2013 which had never been authorized for any condition. They\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2001191\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0that the 35-year-old patient survived. At the time, it was reported as a triumph for the drug, but current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/planning-scenarios.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 infection fatality rate<\/a>\u00a0in 35-year-olds is 0.0005 or 0.05%. The man had a 99.5% chance of surviving his infection in any case.<\/p>\n<p>The National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4872715\/nihs-fauci-touts-positive-results-remdesivir-drug-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced on April<\/a>\u00a029 that an interim analysis from a large-scale, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that remdesivir reduced the median time that severely ill, hospitalized COVID-19 patients took to recover from 15 days to 11 days. There was no statistically significant impact on mortality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be the standard of care,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/29\/dr-anthony-fauci-says-data-from-remdesivir-coronavirus-drug-trial-shows-quite-good-news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fauci said, announcing the findings to reporters<\/a>. \u201cWhen you know a drug works, you have to let people in the placebo group know so they can take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it has proven is a drug can block this virus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, based on the slender data, the NIAID (which is a division of NIH) made the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/05\/11\/inside-the-nihs-controversial-decision-to-stop-its-big-remdesivir-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csecretive and bureaucratic\u201d<\/a>\u00a0decision to give the placebo group in the study remdesivir, effectively ending any study of differences between the two groups.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Mixed results<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Fauci didn\u2019t mention to the public the results of a smaller placebo-controlled study of remdesivir on hospitalized COVID-19 patients in China,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)31022-9\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published on the same day in The Lancet<\/a><\/em>. The study reported no statistically significant benefit from the drug, which did not reduce viral load of infections, either.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also failed to cite the Chinese data when it granted remdesivir \u2013 brand named Veklury \u2013 Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) status, awaiting formal approval. Then-President Donald Trump\u00a0held a press conference in the Oval Office with Gilead CEO Daniel O\u2019Day celebrating the EUA for the drug, which he described as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sZq7xk7E1a0&amp;ab_channel=NBCNews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201chot thing\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in the media.<\/p>\n<p>Gilead soon announced its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/06\/29\/gilead-announces-remdesivir-price-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price tags<\/a>\u00a0for the drug in June: $2,340 for a five-day treatment course in developing nations and $3,120 in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the month, then-Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement that Trump had \u201cstruck an amazing deal\u201d to buy the drug at the lower rate and bought up all of the available remdesivir stock for American use only.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>U.S leads deaths<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It was during this time that America suffered the highest death rate from COVID-19 in the globe, Ardis told the Corona Investigative Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore May 10, the United States had a lower coronavirus death rate than other high-mortality countries, but after that date, all six of the other high-mortality countries (Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) had lower death rates than the United States,\u201d according to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2020\/10\/us-leads-19-nations-covid-19-all-cause-death-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 2020 report<\/a>\u00a0from the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u2018Very, very bad look for the FDA\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Many scientists were baffled by the meteoric rise of remdesivir, which showed weak benefits at best. In October, just before the FDA granted the drug final approval, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.10.15.20209817v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization study<\/a>\u00a0found the drug didn\u2019t decrease mortality or hospital stays.<\/p>\n<p>An article in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/10\/very-very-bad-look-remdesivir-first-fda-approved-covid-19-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a><\/em>\u00a0noted that the drug was approved in \u201cunusual\u201d circumstances that gave Gilead advantages. No outside experts were consulted as was usual for the process, for example.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO data were ignored and Gilead failed to report the dismal findings \u2013 even though it knew about them \u2013 to the European Union as it negotiated prices a week before the study was publicized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very, very bad look for the FDA, and the dealings between Gilead and EU make it another layer of badness,\u201d Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Translational Institute who objected to remdesivir\u2019s FDA approval, told\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Bad look and mixed trial results aside, Gilead has been a big winner in the COVID-19 pandemic, hauling in record-breaking profits. Last week, the drug company reported its second-quarter 2021 revenue of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gilead.com\/news-and-press\/press-room\/press-releases\/2021\/7\/gilead-sciences-announces-second-quarter-2021-financial-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$6.2 billion<\/a>\u00a0increased 21% compared to the same period in 2020, \u201cprimarily due to Veklury\u00ae (remdesivir).\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Longer hospital stays<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Scientists and studies continue to back-and-forth over Veklury\u2019s benefits and reported serious side-effects, including kidney and liver failure, even as the drug\u2019s use has expanded to pregnant women and minors.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?cond=&amp;term=remdesivir+and+covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a>\u00a0of remdesivir are still underway.<\/p>\n<p>A number of case reports describe remdesivir side-effects.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33673216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in February<\/a>\u00a0describes a 36-year-old hospitalized COVID patient who developed a slow heartbeat after taking the drug and recovered when it was discontinued. \u201cConsidering the frequent use of remdesivir in patients with COVID-19, physicians should be aware of this possible adverse event,\u201d the researchers concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cid\/article\/72\/7\/1256\/5864408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case report<\/a>\u00a0describes a 64-year-old whose remdesivir treatment for COVID-19 was stopped with evidence of liver injury from the drug.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmed.2020.606429\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meta-analysis<\/a>\u00a0of nine of 680 published studies on the drug\u2019s use in COVID-19 published in January reported that it decreased mortality.<\/p>\n<p>But a study published last month in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2781959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Journal of the American Medical Association, Infectious Diseases<\/a>\u00a0reported that remdesivir use in U.S. veterans hospitalized with COVID-19 was not associated with improved survival but was associated with longer hospital stays.<\/p>\n<p>Read more
