(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-cdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC<\/a>) confirmed in late 2021 that a person died from blood clotting after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine that had been linked with an increased clotting risk, but did not alert the public for two weeks, newly obtained emails show.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, a CDC official, told colleagues at the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Dec. 2, 2021, \u201cWe have confirmed a 9th TTS death following Janssen vaccination,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22067416-22-00690-for-close-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emails obtained by The Epoch Times<\/a> through a Freedom of Information Act request.<\/p>\n<p>TTS refers to\u00a0thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, a condition that features low platelet levels combined with blood clots.<\/p>\n<p>Officials had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-recommends-pausing-jj-covid-19-vaccine-after-reports-of-blood-clots_3773768.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended a nationwide pause<\/a> on the administration of the vaccine, produced by Johnson &amp; Johnson (J&amp;J) subsidiary Janssen, in April 2021 after six women experienced TTS after J&amp;J vaccination and three died. But they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/pause-on-johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-lifted-cdc-vaccine-advisory-committee_3789016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lifted the pause<\/a> after determining the vaccine remained safe and effective.<\/p>\n<p>The condition was not discussed much in the ensuing months, despite the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M21-4502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7103a4.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting<\/a> that five additional deaths occurred before Aug. 31, 2021.\u00a0Shimabukuro gave a single update, in mid-October 2021, saying five total deaths had been reported.<\/p>\n<p>That was until December 2021. Twelve days after Shimabukuro alerted colleagues of the ninth death, the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/fda-strengthens-warning-over-severe-condition-linked-to-johnson-johnsons-covid-19-vaccine_4159815.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged healthcare workers<\/a> not to administer the vaccine to people with certain conditions because of the TTS risk. Two days after that, Dr. Isaac See, another CDC official, informed the public during a meeting that nine deaths had occurred post-vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear when the CDC learned of the sixth, seventh, and eighth deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC takes reports made to the\u00a0Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System and attempts to confirm the reports, including post-vaccination deaths. A higher number of post-vaccination TTS deaths have been reported to the system than the number the CDC has verified.<\/p>\n<p>One day after Shimabukuro confirmed the ninth death, his message was forwarded by Dr. Amanda Cohn, another CDC official, to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee below, information on a 9th completely tragic death from TTS,\u201d Cohn wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany thanks for letting us know \u2026 any tragic case,\u201d Walensky responded.<\/p>\n<p>The emails were partially redacted; one was fully redacted.<\/p>\n<p>Four days after Shimabukuro\u2019s email, CDC officials gave an update on post-vaccination TTS to\u00a0the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Technical Work Group, part of the agency\u2019s vaccine advisory panel, in a closed-door meeting. The Epoch Times has asked for presentations and audio from the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>It took 14 days to update the public. That happened during a virtual meeting of the advisory panel that anyone was free to tune into.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the delay in making the public aware of the deaths, the CDC provided a comment from the team that works on verifying deaths reported to the\u00a0Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor all reports classified as serious (which includes deaths after vaccination), VAERS (within one business day of receiving the report) requests all available medical records, including death certificates and autopsy reports, for the reported patient. For some reports, including some potential reports of TTS, consultation with experts to determine if the report meets a standardized case definition is performed. Regarding verified reports of TTS where the patient died, these processes occurred during their usual timeframes,\u201d the team said.<\/p>\n<p>During the virtual meeting, advisers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-not-preferred-due-to-link-to-severe-condition-cdc-advisers_4162094.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommended the CDC<\/a> say the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine was not \u201cpreferred\u201d because of its link to TTS. Walensky endorsed the recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t until five months later that drug regulators at the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/fda-restricts-jjs-covid-19-vaccine-over-risk-of-blood-clots_4449010.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">formally restricted the use of the vaccine<\/a> because of the blood clotting risk.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said it conducted an updated analysis of reports and identified 60 confirmed cases, including nine confirmed deaths.
