\nDNA BASED IDENTIFICATION AND TRACKING
\nSYSTEM
\n0001. A method and apparatus for the tracking and iden
\ntity verification of human and animal populations via a
\ndistributed network system is described below. The schema
\nrevolves around a de-centralized identification service that
\nroutes emitted data packets to locate and verify the identity
\nof individuals in a population. The service uses the natural
\nuniversal identifier (e.g. DNA), for both human and animal
\npopulations to route identity specific information through
\nthe various networks and databases.
\n0002 The service consists of an embedded network con
\nsisting of existing communications infrastructure and works
\nby routing unique data packets emitted by a DNARF MEMS
\n(Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems) Device via tradition
\nally Internet Packet Protocols. The apparatus consists of a
\nRF enabled device that emits a unique data packet contain<\/strong>
\ning unique DNA information from the subject.<\/strong> The system<\/strong>
\nuses available wireless networks, internet protocols, and<\/strong>
\nsoftware to be able to locate the subject.<\/strong> The method and
\napparatus enable a unique identifier that allows for the \u201creal
\ntime’ physical, spatial, electronic, and biometric verification
\nof location and identity.
\n0003. The service leverages the power of the network and
\nneural net programs to create an autonomous real time
\nlocation distribution system using the unique identifier that
\ncan be only created by the individual’s DNA. As the
\ninvention relies heavily on existing communications and
\ninformation networks, as well as existing and future appli-
\ncations (software) and the emitting device, the full concept
\nand scope of the invention cannot be fully documented. The
\nbasic categories of the system are 1) the Sensor or Device,
\n2) the Embedding System and 3) the Process. The Sensor
\nelement consists of 1a) a multifunction integrated NEMS\/
\nMEMS (Nano\/Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems) sensor
\nchip 1b) Probe\/Identifier and 1c) RF OLE LINK1(Radio
\nFrequency)OLE LINK1 MEMS (Micro Electrical
\nMechanical Systems) Transceiver. The Embedding System
\nelement consists of the 2a) Sensor Platform 2b) Networking
\nand the 2c) Wireless Link. The final element is the Process
\nelement which consists of the following components: 3a)
\nDelivery, 3b) Operations 3c) Emission.
\n0004) The Sensor element describes the real time DNA
\nRF MEMS Device which uses integrated circuits combining
\nRF and sensor functions on the same chip, approaching
\nsystem-on-a-chip (SoC) implementations. The Probe\/Iden-
\ntifier module describes the components for real time DNA<\/strong>
\nidentification and capturing the Single Nucleotide Polymor<\/strong>
\nphism (SNP) or Short Tandem Repeats (STR) sequence data.<\/strong>
\nThe final component of the Sensor Device is the RF MEMS
\ntransceiver. While all of the components of the sensor are
\ncurrently available in various sizes and forms, this device
\nwill combine the three components to create a process that
\nallows for unique location tracking and identity verification.
\n0005 The Embedding System is a wireless autonomous
\nplatform for the DNA sensors which routes the emitted data
\npacket in the network. While the methodology discussed in
\nthe description of the identification and location service is
\nbased on the specified real time DNA identification sensor
\ncoupled with the RF transceiver (i.e. sensor platform or
\ndevice), the embedding system is functional with RF trans
\nmission of unique DNA identifier data packets not obtained
\nthrough the afore mentioned sensor. The embedding sys
\ntems sensor platform describes the sensor in terms of
\nfunctional components allowing for the evolution of the
\ndevices to become more Sophisticated as the technology
\nevolves and allows for plug and play capabilities based on
\navailable components. The Networking element describes
\nthe autonomous wireless network of sensor data. The Net
\nworking element relies heavily on the standards created for
\nsensor transmission and Internet Protocols based on DNA
\npackets containing the SNP or STR information, Device ID,
\ntime, and other accompanying parameters. The data packets
\nare Small, fixed, and transmitted in regular pluses via the
\nIEEE 802.15, 802.11, and 1415 standards. This enables the
\nWireless Link component to utilize a standard, RF MEMS
\ntransceiver broadcasting the data packets in real time or
\nclose to real time fashion using very little energy.
\n0006 The Delivery component of the Process element is
\nthe unique methodology flow that allows for the DNA RF
\nMEMS Device to be activated by the subject human or
\nanimal. Through the specified delivery methods, the device
\nis able to provide a secure and unique identification emission
\nfrom which location can be tracked, and information can be
\nattached to creating a ubiquitous information wallet, certifi
\ncate, or file. The Operations component refers to the func
\ntions that the sensor platform conducts to obtain and verify
\nthe DNA profile. The final Process component is the Emis
\nsions which refers to the data packet that is broadcast from
\nthe device and includes the physical emissions of the device
\nduring the final stage of the process.
\nBRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
\n0007 FIG. 1 provides the overview conceptualization of
\nthe integrated elements and components. The sensor plat
\nform across the bottom provides the basis for the integrated
\ndevice consisting of the physical components listed as block
\nobjects. The embedding system network is represented
\nabove the device components receiving inputs form the
\ncomponents along the Process steps. The Process is divided
\ninto four steps as opposed to the three steps mentioned in the
\nSummary section to highlight the \u201ceject’ portion of the
\nemission process representing the mechanical process as
\nopposed to the broadcast portion.

\nDETAILED DESCRIPTION
\n0012. As discussed above, the DNA tracking system is
\nbased on a device that broadcasts a DNA data packet to a
\nsensor network. The device and the network work in tandem
\nto provide location and identify verification. While many

\nthe elements can be found in the claims section, this descrip
\ntion refers to the configuration envisioned by the inventor at
\nthe time offiling.
\n0013 The device, also referred to as the sensor platform,
\nis an apparatus for the broadcasting of the DNA profile. The
\nDNA profile that is included in the data broadcast is one of
\nthe following widely accept methods of DNA identification
\ntypically using OLE-LINK2Short Tandem Repeats (STR
\ns)OLE LINK2 or Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP).
\nFIG. 1.1 refers to the integrated attachment (adhesion) of
\nthe device via a probe used for DNA extraction. FIG. 1.2
\nrefers to the traditional three step DNA profiling process for
\nobtaining SNP and\/or STP information. This process is
\nbased on a single use method of extraction of the DNA from
\nthe subject, separation of the DNA elements, and detection
\nof the sequences.
\n0014. There are many methods of DNA typing of which
\nDNA chips are being developed for integrating into MEMS.
\nThe device is method independent although certain param
\neters have to be met. Some of the methods include: SNP
\nbased assays, SNP-haplotyping technology, DNA Sequenc
\ning with Nanopores or Nanowires, DNA Analysis using
\nMicrocantilever array, labeling free DNA detection using an
\nelectrochemical process, labeling free DNA detection using
\nacoustic Surface waves. The device is referred to as sensor
\nplatform due to the fact that one type of DNA profiling
\nmethod is not required. Additionally, in the initial build up
\nof the network, traditional RFID tags with the DNA profile
\nembedded within will be used.
\n0015 FIG. 1.3 refers to the timer or clock component of
\nthe platform allowing for internal operations, timed events
\nfrom delivery to operations and broadcasts of the DNA
\npackets. FIG. 1.4 refers to the transceiver module for
\ncommunications to the sensor network. FIG. 1.5 refers to
\nthe power functions on the sensor platform represented as a
\nbattery function for the delivery and DNA chip process and
\na power function for the emissions functions. These func
\ntions are separated in order to allow for technologies that use
\ntransmitted power generation, vibration power generation,
\nor chemical reaction power generation to be used for the
\nbroadcast functions.
\n0016 FIG. 1.6 refers to the locational processes associ
\nated with determining the location of the device. As with
\nother components of the sensor platform, more than one
\nmethod a determining location can be used and standard
\ncomponents exist for these functions. As stated in the claims
\nsection, the sensor platform may contain a method for
\ndetermination of location using any combination of GPS,
\nassisted GPS, gyro, accelerometer, high frequency Sound
\n(ultrasound), or magnetic induction.
\n0017. The major functions of the device are delivery of
\nthe device to the subject, writing the DNA profile to the
\ndevice, verification of the DNA profile with the network,
\nbroadcasting the DNA data packet on a continuous basis
\nuntil the device receives instructions to stop operations and
\nrelease of the probe? attachment mechanism.
\n0018. As seen in FIG. 2, the components of the device or
\nsensor platform, fit into one integrated system that is divided
\ninto two components. The left side of the dotted line,
\ncontains the emission or broadcast functions while the right
\nside contains the functions necessary for determination of
\nthe DNA profile. The orientation of the components as
\nshown are for illustrative purposes and size is not to scale.
\nThe optional magnetic induction component can be replaced
\nwith high frequency Sound (ultrasound) or optical sensor.
\nThe location processing component is a combination of
\nGPS, assisted GPS, gyro, or accelerometer sensor(s) that
\nmay be used in conjunction with the optional magnetic
\ninduction, high frequency sound (ultrasound), or optical
\nsensor(s).
\n0019. The Embedding System element consists of the
\nSensor Platform, Networking and Wireless Link. As dis
\ncussed above, the sensor platform is the integrated Nanof
\nMicro Electrical Mechanical System sensor chip. The Net
\nworking element is shown in FIG. 3 comprises of the sensor
\nplatform linked to routing stations using an IP based trans
\nport system. The routing stations are connected to the
\nInternet, communication network, and RF wireless network.
\nUsing the Wireless Link, the sensor platform is able to
\nbroadcast the DNA data packet across the IEEE 802.15.
\nIEEE 1415, and IEEE 802.11 wireless standards. Key com
\nponents shown in FIG. 3 are the applications and databases
\nthat subscribe to the DNA data packets via identification
\nservice applications or information bus.
\n0020 FIG. 4 shows the three DNA data network layers
\nthat are network specific, hardware specific and device
\nspecific. The lowest level is the device specific layer that
\nconsists of the broadcast of the DNA profile data packet. The
\nnext layer shows hardware specific sensor platform that
\nincludes the broadcast method and contains the DNA profile.
\nThe last layer is the network specific layer that uses stan
\ndards to route the DNA packets across the network layers to
\nthe applications that Subscribe to the packets. Routes are
\nestablished \u201con demand as requested by the source of
\nwhich only the active routes are maintained by each node.
\n0021. The final element is the Process element which
\nconsists of the following components: Delivery, Operations,
\nand Emission. FIG. 5 shows the link between the three
\nelements with the third element, emission, divided into the
\nbroadcast operations and the eject process. The Delivery
\ncomponent represents the attachment of the device to the
\nsubject. The steps to the right of the Delivery box represent
\nthe device specific steps to obtain the DNA profile. The
\npreferred method of obtaining the DNA profile is using a
\ndevice with a self-contained total analysis system for detec
\ntion of the STR and\/or SNP DNA sequences. The process
\nstarts with the probe component of the device adhering to the
\nSubject and extracting a sample for Separation and Detection
\nof the DNA profile. The Operations process begins after the
\nintegrated Extraction and affixation process is completed
\nand Separation of the sample for Detection begins. Once the
\nDNA profile is obtained, the DNA profile is written to the
\nsensor platform and the verification process begins.
\n0022. The Verify step consists of the data packet consist
\ning of the Device ID, the DNA profile, and time stamp being
\nsent to the network to be remotely verified via the identifi
\ncation system’s applications and databases. Once the system
\nverifies the packet, a signal is sent to the device to start

\ncontinuous broadcasting of the DNA data packet. The Eject
\nprocess occurs when a Receive signal to release the device
\nis received either during the verification process or during
\nnormal operations or if the device stops working. The eject
\nprocess also refers to the optional step after verification of
\nthe DNA data packet occurs and the delivery functions of the
\ndevice illustrated on the left side of the dotted line in FIG.
\n2 are no longer needed. Any portion of the mechanical
\nstructure of the probe used in the affixation process will
\nremain.
\nBACKGROUND OF INVENTION
\n0023) Numerous systems have been conventionally
\nimplemented for determining a geographic location and
\nother parameters associated with persons, things, or appa
\nratuses. The various known location tracking devices, how
\never, have a number of limitations that limit their usefulness
\nin tracking populations. Such conventional systems typically
\ninclude Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to perform the
\ngeo-location determination.
\n0024. Additionally, numerous identity systems and
\ndevices been conventionally implemented for determining
\nand verifying the identity of persons and animals. While
\npassports, cards, licenses, certificates, biometrics, have been
\nimplemented in various manners, all have drawbacks asso
\nciated with scalability and uniqueness and traditionally have
\nnot been direct linked to geographical location tracking.
\n0.025 Requirements for an ideal system include real time
\ncommunications, a unique biometric identifier, and Scalabil
\nity that enables cost effectiveness and upgrades based on
\nnew technologies. Furthermore, conventional systems typi
\ncally restrict users to monitor geo-location devices at dedi
\ncated monitoring systems that are tied to a GPS transmitter.
\nAdvancements in global communication networks, data
\nbases, biosensors, and RF MEMS have allowed the conver
\ngence of the combination of real time biosensors and real
\ntime tracking to create a scalable, cost effective, DNA based
\ntracking and identification system.
\n0026. Therefore, there exists a need for a system and
\nmethod for real time tracking and identity verification via a
\nscalable network. There further exists a need for a system
\nand method to make use of existing communications infra
\nstructure and future enhancements that will allow for inte
\ngration into existing and future tracking systems. A ubiqui
\ntous method and system to combat identity theft and identity
\nfraud while allowing for location tracking is needed.
\n1. An apparatus for establishing a global and universal
\nlocation tracking and identity verification system based on a
\nunique biometric identifier, DNA, comprising of:
\na device that broadcasts DNA profile packets which
\nuniquely identify a subject human or animal: and
\nb. an embedding sensor network that utilizes existing and
\nplanned communication networks to route DNA profile
\npackets via Internet Protocols allowing determination
\nof location.
