These have allegedly caused a rise in cancer-related illnesses across the region over the years.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__text text js-mediator-article\">\n<p><em>&#8220;The NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999 used between 10 and 15 tons of depleted uranium, which caused <strong>a major environmental disaster,<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em> said Srdjan Aleksic, a Serbian lawyer who leads the legal team, which includes lawyers from the EU, Russia, China and India.\u00a0The legal team was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/article\/serbian-royal-academy-to-file-charges-against-nato-05-11-2017\">formed<\/a> by the Serbian Royal Academy of Scientists and Artists.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;In Serbia, 33,000 people fall sick because of this every year. That is one child every day,&#8221;<\/em> <\/strong>he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>NATO&#8217;s press office says it&#8217;s now aware of Serbia&#8217;s allegations, but gave no further comment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<div class=\"read-more__title\">Read more<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><strong><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/377345-depleted-uranium-isis-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span class=\"read-more__footer\">US admits using toxic depleted uranium against ISIS in Syria<\/span> <\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>When asked as of why Serbia has decided to sue NATO 19 years after the attacks, the lawyer said <em>&#8220;considering the horrific consequences for our population&#8230; it is never too late to sue someone who has caused an environmental catastrophe, someone [who] bombed Serbia with a quasi-nuclear weapon, i.e. depleted uranium.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Serbian lawyer says 19 countries that were part of NATO at the time need to pay compensation for <em>&#8220;for the financial and non-financial damages&#8230; to all the citizens who died or fell sick as a proven result of the NATO bombing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We expect the members of NATO to provide treatment to our citizens who are suffering from cancer,&#8221;<\/em> Aleksic said, adding that the bloc &#8220;must also provide the necessary technology and equipment to remove all traces of the depleted uranium&#8221; from Serbia.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The use of banned weapons&#8221;<\/em> by the US-led military alliance in the Balkans<em> &#8220;was a violation of all the international conventions and rules that protect people&#8221;<\/em> from such kind of weapons, the lawyer claimed, adding that NATO also used depleted uranium in Iraq in 1991.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__cover\">\n<div class=\"media\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media__item\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.rt.com\/files\/2017.06\/original\/594068bfc46188b4228b456a.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"media__footer media__footer_bottom \">\n<div class=\"media__title media__title_footer\">An USAF E-3B Awacs early warning airplane lands past air-to-air AIM-9L\/M Sidewinder missiles waiting to be loaded onto jets at Aviano Nato air base in norther Italy, February 23, 1999 \u00a9 Reuters<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>&#8220;The alliance has not been put on trial for this act, but the consequences are disastrous,&#8221;<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/391121-montenegro-nato-accession-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>READ MORE: &#8216;Montenegro: NATO\u2019s latest launchpad on European mainland&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In its 2000 report on depleted uranium, NATO confirmed the use of the munitions both in Iraq and in the Balkans.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In Iraq, about 300 metric tons of DU [depleted uranium] ammunition were fired by American and British troops. Recently, NATO confirmed the use of DU ammunition in Kosovo battlefields, where approximately 10 metric tons of DU were used,&#8221;<\/em> the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nato.int\/du\/docu\/d000500e.htm\">report<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\">\n<div class=\"read-more__title\">Read more<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/in-motion\/382227-nato-bombing-yugoslavia-commemoration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"read-more__cover aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.rt.com\/files\/2017.03\/thumbnail\/58d56206c4618897158b45f3.jpg\" alt=\" \u00a9 Ruptly\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"arcticle__read-more read-more\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/in-motion\/382227-nato-bombing-yugoslavia-commemoration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span class=\"read-more__footer\">Serbia marks 18 years since start of NATO bombing<\/span> <\/a><\/div>\n<p>The UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icty.org\/en\/press\/final-report-prosecutor-committee-established-review-nato-bombing-campaign-against-federal#IVA2\">admitted<\/a><em>&#8220;there is evidence of use of depleted uranium (DU) projectiles by NATO aircraft during the bombing campaign.&#8221;<\/em> However, the UN tribunal has pointed out that<em> &#8220;there is no specific treaty ban on the use of DU projectiles.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reporting on the consequences of the use of such munitions for civil population and the environment, a NATO report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nato.int\/du\/docu\/d000500e.htm\">said<\/a> that<em> &#8220;in the vicinity of the impact point of DU ammunitions, it is not excluded that individuals unaware of the contamination&#8230; could have accumulated radiation doses and\/or could have incorporated uranium quantities exceeding the internationally recognized limits.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In May, Balkan Insight <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/article\/serbian-royal-academy-to-file-charges-against-nato-05-11-2017\">reported<\/a> that around 50 people from the Serbian city of Nis, who have been suffering from cancer and have <em>&#8220;seemingly relevant medical documentation&#8221;<\/em> have asked the legal team of 26 lawyers and professors to represent them in the case against NATO.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/385709-balkan-war-kosovo-albania-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>READ MORE: Serbia warns of new Balkan war if Albania unites with Kosovo<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>NATO launched airstrikes in what was then Yugoslavia in March 1999, without the backing of the UN Security Council, after it accused Belgrade of \u201c<em>excessive and disproportionate use of force in Kosovo<\/em>\u201d in a conflict with insurgent Muslim ethnic Albanians.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/yugoslavia-kosovo-nato-bombing-705\/\">READ MORE: Looking back at NATO&#8217;s \u2018humanitarian\u2019 bombing of Yugoslavia <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With no UN mandate, NATO bombing of Serbia lasted for three months, having resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"addthis_sharing_toolbox\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/392126-serbia-lawsuit-nato-depleted-uranium\/#.WUCHMKbvdi0.facebook\" data-title=\"\u2018Up to 15 tons of depleted uranium used in 1999 Serbia bombing\u2019 \u2013 lead lawyer in suit against NATO \" data-description=\"An international legal team is preparing a lawsuit against NATO over the alliance\u2019s alleged use of depleted uranium munitions during its bombing of Yugoslavia.
