Today, I commemorate with you the tragic events and enduring consequences of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20 1974, that continues to this day. \u2028\u2028I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives during the summer of 1974 and hope that the pursuit of justice will help to honour their memories.<\/span><\/p>\n

On this, the 43rd anniversary of the occupation, members of the international Cypriot Diaspora are marking the occasion by demanding the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus and an end to the occupation. I encourage all parties to engage in constructive dialogue that will resolve the current situation based on goodwill and a respect for territorial integrity and human rights.\u2028\u2028I have long advocated a \u2018peace with justice\u2019 solution for the island of Cyprus where thirty-seven per cent of the island, is occupied by Turkey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1988, I have visited Cyprus many times; participated in the Morfu Marches and other marches with the \u2018Lobby for Cyprus\u2019 and the Ayios Amvrosios Association; and, met, together with representatives of these organizations officials of the Government of Cyprus, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and UNESCO.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2013, I met with officials of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with respect to the destruction of the religious and cultural history in the northern part of Cyprus. \u2028\u2028I will continue to be actively involved with the community with respect to this critical situation.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe it is important for us to remember the lessons of history and uphold the values of peace, freedom, democracy and respect.\u2028\u2028It is about time that the rest of the world holds the perpetrators responsible and demand the immediate withdrawal of the Turkish military forces<\/span><\/p>\n
