DIEM25 explains Mario Draghi&#8217;s illegal actions against Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_separator wpb_content_element vc_separator_align_center vc_sep_width_100 vc_sep_pos_align_center h2 vc_separator-has-text\">\n<h4>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8100\" src=\"https:\/\/diem25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ecb-greekfiles.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diem25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ecb-greekfiles.jpg 400w, https:\/\/diem25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ecb-greekfiles-300x170.jpg 300w\" alt=\"#TheGreekFiles\" width=\"400\" height=\"227\" \/><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><big>In June 2015, the newly-elected Greek government was locked in tense negotiations with its creditors (the \u2018Troika\u2019 \u2013 the ECB, EC and IMF), doing what it had been voted in to do: renegotiate the country\u2019s public debt, fiscal policy and reform agenda, and save its people from the hardship of the most crushing austerity programme in modern history.<\/big><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><big>The Troika knew they needed to make a drastic move<strong> to force the Greek government to capitulate.<\/strong> And that\u2019s just what they did: through the ECB, <strong>they took action to force Greece\u2019s banks to close, ultimately driving the Greek government \u2013 against its democratic mandate \u2013 to accept the country\u2019s third \u2018bailout\u2019, together with new austerity measures and new reductions in national sovereignty.<\/strong><\/big><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><big>But in their haste, their zeal to crush the Greek government\u2019s resistance, the ECB feared their actions might be legally dubious. So they commissioned <strong>a private law firm<\/strong> to examine whether those decisions were legal. The legal opinion of this law firm is contained in #TheGreekFiles.<\/big><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><big>In July 2015, the German MEP Fabio De Masi <a href=\"https:\/\/diem25.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/170217_DiEM25_ECB_Campaign_Background_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">asked<\/a> Mario Draghi to release the legal opinion. Mario <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/pub\/pdf\/other\/150918letter_demasi_3.en.pdf?3b09ce5006efe8c5acdb2b7e7ed5869d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">refused<\/a>, hiding behind \u2018attorney-client privilege\u2019.
